A kindness

When Chris came to my assistance, we were hallway nodding acquaintances and not much more. I was on the losing end of a smackdown and Chris stepped in to help. When I thanked him afterwards and asked him why he had helped me out of a bad situation - he laughed ( a memorable laugh ) and asked me why he wouldn't ? It was a small kindness that had a profound effect upon me, and I hope that it has had a profound effect on how I have acted ever since. For the last year or so, I have had the oddest compulsion to reach out to Chris to express my gratitude - for his help and for its more permanent influence. I should have acted upon this instinct and I deeply regret not doing this while the opportunity existed - it turns out I still had something to learn from Chris.
