Obituary for Margaret D. Scherer (Doig)

Margaret Doig Scherer died surrounded by loving family on October 12, 2016. She was born on July 7, 1922 in Cowdenbeath, Scotland, located just outside Edinburgh. She was the daughter of the late James and Janet (Picken) Doig of Marcellus and the sister of the late Alexander Doig of Sharon Springs, NY. Her family immigrated to the United States in 1924. Margaret graduated from Marcellus Central Schools. She was a longtime employee at Carrier Corporation and later was the Tax Collector for the Town of Marcellus. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Marcellus, serving as a Deacon for many years.

Mrs. Scherer’s priority and love was her family, from taking care of her parents to raising her three children. She and her husband enjoyed socializing with their family and close friends at their camp on Cross Lake and hosting family gatherings in their home in Marcellus.

Mrs. Scherer, in her retirement, enjoyed visiting her relatives in Scotland and traveling throughout the United States and Europe to visit her children and grandchildren. She and her husband enjoyed wintering in Florida with Betty and Bill Johnstone. Margaret and Betty were first cousins and best friends. She loved to listen to her sons play the bagpipes and she travelled to Europe and Canada to see the Scottish World Games.
She is predeceased by her husband of 61 years, the love of her life, Jack Emerich Scherer. She is survived by their three sons and their wives, six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. They are Jack and his wife Holly, and their children Jack and Helen; David and his wife Joanne, and their daughters Heather and Amanda, and their grandchildren Jason and Giuliana; and Alexander (also known as Sandy) and his wife Erin and their two sons James and Colin.
Service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, October 15th at the Marcellus First Presbyterian Church, 1 E. Main St., Marcellus. Calling hours will be from 5 to 7 PM on Friday, October 14th, at the Plis Funeral Home, 33 North St., Marcellus.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be offered to the Ecumenical Food Pantry at the First Presbyterian Church in Marcellus.
